Jewish Quarter
You can visit some of the small synagogues and yeshivot (singular yeshivd), tucked away in alleys and courtyards throughout the Jewish Quarter. Young men in a few places, young women live in these academic institutions for years as they pursue Judaic learning. Several yeshivot have begun aggressively wooing Jews with little or no religious background to come for short-or sometimes intermina-hie-stays. Stop in at Aish haTorah-students here are mostly American and welcome visitors, even for only one class (though you may have a tough time leaving). To reach Aish haTorah from the Western Wall, walk up the stairs to the Jewish Quarter and take your first left onto the street before the covered arcade (Beit haSho’eva Rd.). Women should apply to the yesbiva’s administrative office off Shvut Rd. in the Jewish Quarter.
