Entertainment
When asked about the city’s sparse entertainment, Haifa’s first mayor pointed to the city’s factories and said, “There is our nightlife.” Although still an unusually quiet metropolis, Haifa does not lack nocturnal attractions. The GTIO and Municipal Office can both supply information on nightlife. Pick up the free monthly Events in] Haifa and the Northern Region for a complete listing of daily concerts and special,, events, or call the What’s Hot in Haifa Hotline (tel. 37 42 53).
A relaxing evening activity is a walk along Yefeh Nof St. (see Sights for directions)where twinkling city lights only add to the dramatic view. Nearby Gan Ha’Em is; always lively and occasionally has free summer concerts. On Mondays, listen for] rock concerts at 5:30pm; tickets cost NIS1-20. Still in the Carmel Center, the Haifa Auditorium, a few blocks from Gan Ha’Em on 142 HaNassi Blvd., is frequented by the Israel Philharmonic and other cultural acts. The expensive tickets are usually available the day of performances; inquire at the tourist office in the morning for information. In the same building is the Haifa Cinematheque, (tel. 38 34 24 or 38, 62 46), screening several English movies every night except Friday (NIS16); the annual Haifa Film Festival, in the holiday of sukkot (early fall), is based here. Check; billboards and listings for regular film shows on the city’s over 20 screens.
