Back on the waterfront promenade, the Franciscan Terra Sancta Church (tel. 72 05 16) stands next to the Caesar Hotel. The church was built in the 12th century to commemorate St. Peter’s role in the growth of Christianity, and is thus known as St. Peter’s. The apse behind the altar is arched like the bow of a boat, in honor of his first career as a fisherman. In the courtyard is a statue of the Virgin built by Polish troops who were quartered in the church from 1942 to 1945. (Open daily 8-11:45am and 2-5pm.)
Farther south stands a blue and red marina, now home to several shops on the bottom and the Galilee Experience (tel. 72 36 20) complex on top. The complex includes a bookstore and a plush theater, and is run by a group of Cliristians and Messianic Jews who overrode the protests of the local Orthodox community and overhauled the old marina building. The main attraction here is a 36-minute film that provides an overview of the past 4,000 years in the Galilee, emphasizing the life of Jesus as well as the birth of the modern Israeli state. Attached to the theater is a bookstore that sells Jewish ritual objects, Communion grape juice, and both Easter and bar mitzvah cards. A small cafe with a view of the coastline is at the rear of the bookstore. (Film shown every’ hr. Sun.-Thurs. 9am-10pm, Fri. 9am-5pm, Sat. 6~ 10pm, admission US$6. Many of the screenings are in English.)
