Transportation within Cairo - Bus
Outside the main stations, catching a bus is often a matter of running it down and properly timing your leap, as they seldom come to a full stop. The entrance is always through the rear doors (except at a terminus), which have been torn off most buses to facilitate this practice. To disembark, pick a moment when the bus is not moving too rapidly and face the front as you jump off. If you want the bus to come to a full halt at an official bus stop, you must exit through the front door. The front of a bus is generally less crowded than the rear, so it’s worth the effort to push your way forward. An emphatic warning: when traveling by bus, keep wallets and valuables securely buried on your person. Although violent crime is rare in Cairo, a khoaga on a crowded bus is an irresistible opportunity for the occasional pick- pocket. Few foreigners actually brave the bus system; women who are so inclined, however, should pass up ridiculously overcrowded vehicles so as to avoid unabashed stares and wandering hands.
