Passport Office: Mugama Bkig., southern end of Tahrir Sq. Passports must be registered within 7 days of arrival. Find “Information” window on 2nd fir. Registration open summer 8am-4pm and 8-10pm; winter 8am-4pm antl7-9pm, slightly shorter hours on Thurs., Fri., and holidays for both seasons; Ramadan daily 10am-2pm. Evening hours are least crowded. Ask at your hotel; they may register for you. Also come here for visa extensions-be sure to bring bank receipts showing that you have exchanged at least US$180 (or the equivalent) into LE. Exchange your money at a bank; receipts from even the most reputable of hotels may not do the job.

American Embassy: 5 Latin America St. (tel. 355 7371), 2 blocks south of Tahrir Sq. For consular services enter on Lazaughli St., around the block. Lost or stolen passports replaced overnight for US$65 or LE227.50. Letters of introduction for visas issued on request. Consulate open Sun.-Thurs. 8am-lpm; in an emergency, call after hours.
British Embassy: 7 Ahmed Ragheb St. (tel. 354 0850), south of U.S. Embassy. Handles New Zealand affairs too. Will replace both Pommie and Kiwi passports within five days for £18. Open Mon.-Fri. 8am-2pm; call for an after-hours emergency.
