Car Rental: For maniacs willing to risk life and limb to achieve relative freedom of mobility: Avis (tel. 76 64 32/3), Europcar (tel. 340 1152), Hertz (tel. 347 4172/ 2238). and Budget (tel. 341 3790). Rates for a compact range between US$33 and US$60 per day; promotional and weekly rates are better. Age restrictions vary: 21 and older for Hertz, 25 for Europcar and Avis, and 26 for Budget. Lockers: Luggage and valuables storage. On the ground floor of Ramses Station, Ramses Sq. 30pt per day for a maximum of 14 days. Walk into the station and ask anyone in uniform, “Feen al-khazaa’in?” (Where are the lockers?) Open 24 hrs.
English Bookstores: Shorouk Bookshop, Tala’at Harb Sq. (tel. 391 2480), is packed with schlock romance and whodunits. Open daily 9am-9pm. AUC Bookstore, Hill House, American University in Cairo, 113 Kasr al-Ainj St. (tel. 357 5377), has a wide range of English literature, guidebooks, and maps. Open Sun.-Thurs. 8:3Oam-4pm, Sat. 10am-3pm.
Anglo-Egyptian, 165 Muhammad Farid St. (tel. 391 4337), has new and used English literature at reasonable prices. Open Mon.-Sat. 9am-l :30pm and 4;30-8pm.
