North Saqqara

Filed under:

Although now entirely buried in sand, an Avenue of Sphinxes once ran the full width of the site, commencing near the Tomb of Ti, running a straight course east past the Step Pyramid complex and ending at the river’s edge near the Pyramid of Titi. This weathered pyramid can be reached by following the east-west highway past the Rest House to the fork and then heading a short distance north. The interior of Titi’s tomb has several interesting sacred inscriptions, but it’s usually closed to the public. The 30 rooms comprising the magnificent Tomb of Mereruka. just next door to the Pyramid of Titi, are open. The naturalistic portrayal of wildlife found inside the Tomb of Mereruka has enabled scientists to learn a great deal about ancient Egyptian fauna. Various species of fish can be differentiated thanks to the minutely detailed work of the artists.

Farther east is the neighboring Tomb of Ankhma-Hor. Though the decorations are relatively sparse, there are several representations of medical operations, including toe surgery and a circumcision. One noted Egyptologist has asserted that the 6th dynasty tendency to depict funerary scenes indicates a growing pessimism among Egyptians about the afterlife as the Old Kingdom went into its final decline.
