Outside the huge fortress-like wall, the remains of a small shrine are visible to the southeast; the present structure is largely a reconstructed facade. This melange of Nubian remains includes pre-dynastic elephants, a large giraffe, and gazelles. The double-image technique, characteristic of Nubian temples, is used to portray motion in some of the drawings. Be careful where you step; carcasses of enormous desiccated fish are surrealistically scattered surrealistically amongst the sands.

Slightly to the southwest of Kalabsha Temple are ruins of the Temple of Kertassi. Two Hathor columns remain, as well as four other columns with elaborate floral capitals and a single monolithic architrave. As you walk back toward the ticket office, tell the guard you want to see the Rock Temple of Beit al-Wali (House of the Holy Man), rescued from the encroaching waters of Lake Nasser with the aid of the U.S. government. The small temple is at the end of an uphill path from the office. One of many Nubian temples constructed by Ramses II, it features the typically modest poses of Ramses conquering foreign enemies, Ramses receiving prisoners, and the particularly understated scene of Ramses storming a castle half his size. like a miniature Abu Simbel, this cave-temple was hewn from solid rock. Examine the bas-relief scenes closely: political and social history are portrayed in everything from graphic chariot battles to household toil over whose turn it is to dry the dishes.
