Israel, 207 Abd as-Salem Aref, Roushdy (tel. 586 0492). Open Sun.-Thurs. 9:30am-12:30pm. The U.S. consulate closed at the end of summer 1993. Currency Exchange: Plentiful exchange places offer better rates than banks, but only take cash. Egyptian banks are on every other street corner in downtown, the largest of which will exchange traveler’s checks. Most open Sat.-Thurs. 8:30am-noon and 5-7 or 8pm. National Bank, in the Cecil Hotel, Sa’ad Zaghloul Sq. (tel. 80 70 55), is open daily 3-9pm.
Bank of America (tel. 493 1115), across from the football stadium on Lomomba St., 1 block south of Al-Hurriya St., and Barclay’s, 10 Fawoteur St. (tel. 482 1308), are both open Sun.-Thurs. 9:3Oam-l:3Opm. Citibank (tel. 483 4363) is on the corniche about 1km east of downtown. American Express: Small branch office in Eyress Travel, 26 Al-Hurriya St. (tel. 483 0084), 5 blocks south (via Nabi Danial St.) of Sa’ad Zaghloul Sq. Financial and client letter services available.
