English Bookstores: Cosmopolitanism be damned; the pickings are slim. Al-Ma’aref (see Orientation) has a few English titles; Book Center, 49 Sa’ad Zaghloul St. (tel. 482 2925), has a good selection of English and Egyptian literature in paperback (open Sat.-Thurs. 9am-l :30pm and 6-9pm); the Ramadan Bazaar Bookshop features some AUC books (open 9am-llpm; tel. 86 61 11); and Al-Ahram, 13 Al-Hurriya St. (tel. 483 4000), opposite the Piccadilly Hotel, has an impressive collection of detective novels and medical texts. There are also a number of smaller photo accessory and film shops along Sa’ad Zagliloul St. Pharmacy: Many are located along Sa’ad Zaghloul St. or scattered throughout downtown.
