Orientation and Practical Information
The new road from Marsa Matrouh is well-paved but infrequently used. The best way to travel is to catch a bus from the main station in Matrouh. The buses (no A/Q leave daily at 7:30am and 3pm and cost LE6, and the air-conditioned but much more crowded version departs Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday at 4pm and costs LE8. (Both buses take 5hr. and arrive at the station ^hr. before departure time.) From Alexandria’s Misr Station there is one daily bus (10am, LE12.50) and the much-prized air-conditioned service on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday (noon, LE17).
Non-air-conditioned buses return to Marsa Matrouh daily at 6:30am and 1:30pm (LE6), with the morning bus continuing to Alexandria (LEI 2.50). Air-conditioned buses also leave Siwa on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 10am for Marsa Matrouh (LE8) and Alexandria (LE17). The bus station in Siwa is located in the town square, but incoming buses continue through town about lkm and stop in front of the Badawi Hotel (see Accommodations). All buses stop at the simple desert Rest House halfway between Marsa Matrouh and Siwa, where you can buy tea and snacks but not bottled water. There is an outhouse behind the store. Buses break down on occasion; take bottled water and food with you.
