In the downtown area, rolled falafel sandwiches are a budgeteer’s dream (lOflfils). Two busy stands opposite AI-Husseini Mosque are open until 1 lpm. If you’re in the Shmeisani district, ask for directions to the Ata AM Cafe across from the Housing Bank. This popular spot is modeled after the American Baskin-Robbins. For the weight-conscious, Frosty across the street offers 50-calories-per-scoop ice cream. Unabashedly homesick Americans should head to the Pizza Hut in the Petra Center building in Shmeisani. Though prices are not higher than what you’d pay back in the States, a pizza will still cost more than your Jordanian hotel room. Stop in at Zalatimo Sweets for a cavity-catalyst of Arabic candy and pastries. It’s in the large gray building at the top of the hill on which Abdali is located.
The district of Um Uthaina, by the Sixth Circle, past Amra Hotel, offers a variety of appetizing and cheap edibles. Grilled haloomi (white cheese) wraps (200fiIs) are the specialty at Al-Baron, whereas LaiLak serves hamburgers for a mere 380fils. The thin purple neon signs and the sidewalk cafes contribute to the street’s festive atmosphere.
