Southern Jordan - Along Kings’ Highway (Al-Mujib)
The distances are manageable: 33km from Amman to Madaba, 98km from Mad- : aba to Karak, and 150km from Karak to Petra. The total distance from Amman to Petra is 282km along the Kings’ Highway or 262km along the Desert Highway. Many people find camping sites in the wadis north of Karak or in the desert regions between Karak and Petra. A Rest House and a couple of hotels in Karak provide the only indoor accommodations.
To take the Desert Highway from downtown Amman, hitchhikers head south on Jerusalem St. (injabal Nadhif across Wadi Abdoun), which metamorphoses into the Desert Highway (Rte. 15). To get to the Kings’ Highway they then take a service from Amman’s Wahadat Station all the way to Madaba (33Ofils) and then try their luck on the road to Karak, which passes out of Madaba by the Apostles’ Church; alternatively, some head south toward Queen Alia International Airport. At the intersection of the Kings’ Highway and the Desert Highway, 18km south of Amman, small groups of hitchhikers stand by the mini-obelisk marking this fork. People reach the intersection by taking the Madaba-bound service from Wahadat Station, or by hitching south from Seventh Circle.
